Description
Artist, Marjorie Pesek, will teach you her exciting collage technique of Layered Imagery. Students with any level of artistic talent will see their creative side emerge. By cutting and assembling together images you select from magazines, you will recreate your own version of your beloved pet, your favorite flower, toy, car or any subject you would like into a unique piece of art.
Each registered student will be asked to email a photo of the subject they would like to create, 10 days prior to class to mepesek@aol.com and select either an 11” x 14” or 16” x 20” canvas. Marjorie will sketch their subject onto the canvas and bring with her to class. Students should be sure there is a clear central subject in their selection (people portraits are not encouraged) and to bring more small photos of their subject to class.

Description
This simple one-day workshop on drawing will walk you through many of the “basics” of drawing. Whether a refresher or the first drawing class you have ever taken, it will make sense and help you have a better understanding of drawing. Developed by the many requests of painting students, Douglas has assembled all the basic areas of drawing and the things he thinks you need to know to make your paintings better and to correct problem areas that might come up in your work. Some of the basics of composition and general sketching to get shapes and proportions correct, massing in large shapes, simple easy to understand perspective for landscape/seascape, understanding and tackling the task of drawing the various ellipses on vases, pitchers, bowls and plates for floral/still lifes, point-of-view, contour line, figure and how to build into a streetscape and get the scale correct, and the checklist of what to look for when trouble shooting a painting and a drawing problem.
The entire class is done with pencil in your notebook/sketchbook. Lots of presentation, demo and workbook-type exercises to help you understand and comprehend these basics. A great class by itself to feel better about drawing or great to go with Douglas’ landscape/seascape and floral/still life class/workshop

Description Brand New Workshop!
Class will cover the basic principles of oil painting with regard to seascapes, beaches and dunes. Learn how to build the wave, capture the motion of the sea and better understand the colors in the sand. After the basics are covered, we will start by painting a wave and several seascapes, beaches and dunes in various atmospheric conditions throughout the 2-day workshop. For those who have studied with Douglas before, this overview of principles is always a good review, and no matter what the subject, these principles are key, and new discussions and tips are added each season. Each day’s demo will include simple discussions on composition, massing, building form, light and shadow, near and far, capturing and developing atmospheric distance, and depending on your own style, knowing when a work is finished (learning how to not overwork your painting). Students will work in their own style/technique so that the finished work is their own. Douglas will overview his palette and concepts his work entails.

Jan. 25, 26, 2024 9:30am-3:30pm
Description Brand new Workshop!
This exciting and fun class will cover the basic principles of oil painting specifically with regard to painting mangroves. After the basics are covered, we will start by painting some basic mangroves and their roots and move up to more complicated groupings of trees and their reflections throughout the two days.
After a brief morning intro and adequate time to mix and set up the palette, Douglas will demo a simple mangrove and let the class follow along. Much time will be allowed for individual discussion and review in a systematic rotation.
Various mangroves and their reflections will be painted over the 2-day workshop and some incredible paintings will be accomplished. Depending on the skill level of each student, students are able to grow and develop at a rate that is to their comfort. Demos and individual discussions/instruction will help each student to begin to reach the preliminary goals they are striving to meet. Plan to produce several paintings. Plan to bring notebook/sketchbook and enjoy some demos along with some great stories to help you remember these principles that are the foundation of Douglas’ teaching.
Class Tentative Outline
Day 1 1st hour: Welcome/Overview of Class. 2nd hour: Discuss principles with demos to explain ideas and concepts. 3rd hour: Mix Palette (Strings of color/organize your palette). Lunch: Brown bag. Afternoon: Demo in classroom on how to paint various mangroves.

Description
This is a great class for beginners (yes, you can do it!), as well as accomplished painters looking for a fun way to find new images, and loosen up. Learn some easy decorative lettering, drawing and watercolor techniques, composition and more. You’ll go home with your own journal full of images from the Botanical Garden and plenty of ideas for more.
What is an “illustrated journal?” It’s a small book of watercolor paper in which you record images and text around any theme. Traditionally used to record memories while traveling, your journal can also record family memories, images of your hometown, favorite recipes, visits to restaurants, any theme that gets you into action. Turn your journal into a work of art!
You’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish!
Students will meet at the Naples Botanical Garden entrance at 10am. Car Pooling will be available by contacting Hannah prior to the class date. Email hannah@tidewater.net or call 207-380-4334. There may be an additional entry fee if there are not enough Garden members or passes.

Private Lives by Noel Coward
Revived in 2002 by the Royal National Theatre in a production that sparkled on Broadway, Private Lives is one of the most sophisticated, entertaining plays ever written. Elyot and Amanda, once married and now honeymooning with new spouses at the same hotel, meet by chance, reignite the old spark and impulsively elope. After days of being reunited, they again find their fiery romance alternating between passions of love and anger. Their aggrieved spouses appear and a roundelay of affiliations ensues as the women first stick together, then apart, and new partnerships are formed. A uniquely humorous play boasting numerous successful Broadway runs with stars like Coward himself, Laurence Olivier, Tallulah Bankhead, Gertrude Lawrence, Tammy Grimes, Richard Burton, and Elizabeth Taylor.
