LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: Students of all experience levels are encouraged to attend, however these techniques are more suited for intermediate to advanced levels of throwing skills. Some may want to observe and learn while others may want to get their hands dirty. When we get to the creation of slabs, all levels will benefit.

STRUCTURE OF YOUR CLASSES: Throwing pots and making slabs and handles for the purpose of adding texture and stretching. We will start with a demonstration of throwing, showing the students a few tips on how to get a little more out of your clay. We will demonstrate how we prepare a cylinder for receiving texture and applying materials such as sodium silicate and engobes or underglazes to visually enhance textures which occur as a result of stretching the clay from a cylinder into a more bulbous shape.

SUBJECT MATTER: Each student will have a turn at the potters wheel to try their hand at expanding the clay on the wheel. They will be able to trim a piece the next day and take a bone dry piece home to have it bisque fired. Each student will have a turn expanding and stretching slabs and will make a plate and a box.

CRITIQUES: NONE.

MATERIALS: Clay and glazing materials will be provided.

WHAT THE STUDENT CAN EXPECT TO ACCOMPLISH BY THE END OF YOUR COURSE OF INSTRUCTION: To be exposed to a variety of techniques which will demonstrate how to achieve texture by stretching clay.

INSTRUCTOR: WOODS

Artist Glenn Woods makes his home and studio in Palm Harbor, Florida. I have been exploring clay and making both functional and decorative pottery sine 1974. It has only been since 2001 that I have been a full time potter. I market my work through art fairs I Florida during the fall, winter and spring and focus on the Midwest states during the summer months. Most of my work is functional with about 20% decorative purposes only. I fire to cone 6 oxidation and use white stoneware. All of my work is wheel thrown and altered or a combination of hand built and thrown pieces. Decorative pieces are highly textured with black underglaze emphasizing the texture.
