LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: Beginning students with some experience are welcome

STRUCTURE OF CLASSES: Class starts with a teacher demo followed by class time for students to work on the lesson. Students are monitored and given individual instruction as needed or desired.

SUBJECT MATTER: Students work from their own photos or from the teacher’s collection. Subject matter can be landscapes, seascapes or cityscapes as specified in opening demo. Technique and color mixing as well as composition are stressed as part of the subject matter that day.

CRITIQUES: Students class time work is followed by a voluntary critique. This is a joint undertaking using the experience of the teacher along with input from the class. It is a positive part of learning.

WHAT THE STUDENT CAN EXPECT TO ACCOMPLISH BY THE END OF YOUR COURSE OF INSTRUCTION: Completion of a painting is not as valuable as learning technique, color values and composition and to be able to judge the merits of each for oneself. The process is more important than the completion of a work.

INSTRUCTOR: JOAN SCHERER

Joan Scherer, artist and art educator, has been teaching watercolor at the Art League of Marco Island since 1991.Trained as a teacher with a BS in English from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a MED from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Joan has pursued painting, turning an avocation into a vocation. She has earned awards in pastel, oil and watercolor. Color is primarily what fuels her passion for watercolor. The water is the vehicle by which color is moved around the paper and determines if the color is rich or subtle, dark or light. Joan has a special love of warm weather scenery and the rich warm colors that she uses in her demonstrations. Students feel rewarded by the liberal critique sessions that Joan feels are so vital to the watercolor experience.
